About me

I am a teacher at the Connected Learning Centre. This is the Teen Parent Unit attached to Tangaroa College, Otara, Auckland. I teach English, Careers and supervise students doing History and Business. I am passionate about supporting teen parents to achieve their educational and career pathway goals and to be the best parents they can be. The model of learning through Individual Education Plans and the flexibility of attending a teen parent unit has widened my view of how secondary education could work and I want to see this personalised approach to learning and its links between curriculum areas put into practise in mainschool settings.

We have interviews with the responsible adult when they enrol, then we send home reports in Term 1 and 2. Whanau come in to collect the reports and we have a talk about the student's progress. The student is there and explains their IEP and goals. We also send out a newsletter each term and keep in touch via phone regarding attendance and any other issues as they arise.
The whanau days - which are on the same days as the parent teacher meetings in the main school, are really well attended.
They are run all day for two days in a row.

    Welcome aboard.
Just interested how other TPU's involve the girl's whanau. Do you send home reports, have parent/whanau evenings or afternoons to talk to them about their girl? Would be interesting to see what other TPU's did.
