About me

Malo e lelei, My name is Lisa 'Alofi and I have been teaching for 22 years.  I am married to a wonderful man, who is Tongan named Lama and we have one amazing son named Micah, who has just turned 7.

I have had the privilege of teaching across Year 1-10 over the past 22 years and am currently teaching a gorgeous group of young people who range form Year 7-10.  I have taught in both State, State-Integrated Christian schools and now a private Christian School in Rotorua.  We are just about to celebrate our 3rd year in existence!

It is an amazing journey of poineering a new work and working with the constraints of very limited budgets.  It is exciting, challenging, wonderful and hard all at the same time some days. We have some incredible stories of young people being transformed in character and this  so often translates into richer learning outcomes.  I am passionate about great relationship with our young people and seeing them equipped to be all they were created to be.

I taught Year 6 for a number of years and saw how Middle School education could make or break a young person and so have become passionate about developing a Middle School that caters purposefully for this age group.  At Chapman we now have two classes at Year 7-10 and are seeking  to develop philosophy and practice that best supports these young people.  We also have a class of Year 0-3 and Year 4-6 and want to see this area of our school grow so that it feeds into our Middle School area naturally.

I enjoy aspects of e-learning but confess to being very inexperienced in many ways.  I want to upskill so I can be the head and not the tail in terms of what truly enhances learning and what is just 'bells and whistles' with little value for enriching or improving learning all round.

I personally enjoy using IT but do not want to see it take the place of relating to others face to face etc... I know there are tools that also can bring people together and I do utilise these myself.  I guess I am conscious of being in a world where the pace is already fast, the ability to  be in contact with others 24/7 is real and that there are both incredible opportunities and desperate pitfalls with the use/overuse of IT.

I want to be a teacher who equips young people for the world they are living in but gives them so much  more than a bunch of skills or tools (which no doubt will be incredibly different 5 years from now) but sees them as whole people that need unchanging character qualities in their lives like integrity, personal responsibility, faithfulness, resilience, creativity etc... that will hold them no matter what tool or technique they may need to  employ.

Anyway... I have joined this community to upskill myself as I have said and to grow and learn from some of you that  have journeyed much further down this road.

Malo 'aupito (thank you very much)

Kia ora Lisa and welcome to the VLN.
    : )

I see you are interested in networking with other teachers, perhaps you could give us a few details of your special areas of interest on your profile to help us find the best groups for you.

In the meantime maybe I could suggest a few groups to help you to get started in the VLN.

You might like to join the "Getting started on the VLN" group, here you will find a wealth of tips to help you get the most out of the VLN.

For the latest in e-learning you may like to join this group too.

Looking forward to working with you online.

    Ngā mihi nui, nā Catriona.
