About me

Dagmar Dyck (b. 1972, Auckland) is a painter and printmaker of Tongan German descent. As a first generation New Zealander she has been brought up to respect and acknowledge her unique ancestry.  Alongside her professional career she has fulfilled mentoring and teaching positions in both academic and community institutions.  She completed her BFA at Elam School of Fine Arts (Auckland University) in 1994 and Post Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts in 1995. In 2009 she obtained her Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) through Victoria University.

Dyck’s artistic work continues to explore within the realm of Tongan culture koloa, a general term that encompasses Tonga’s tangible and intangible heritage of textile and material wealth.  Threaded throughout her work is a visual process that documents the transformation of raw material to woven treasure.  Her work remains sectionalised as Tongan heritage proclaims, but the palette combines the energies and colours of a modern Pacific landscape with the subtlety of customary ritual.

She is currently the specialist art and technology teacher at Sylvia Park School, Mt Wellington, Auckland.
