  • Public
Last updated by Breda Matthews

Hi everyone

First a reminder that applications for the TESSOL Scholarships close on 16th November. Please share details with your colleagues. This qualification can transform teachers' practice and make a significant contribution to language and literacy outcomes across the school. An important goal in preparation for the new literacy standards teachers in all subjects will be contributing to literacy outcomes.

To apply, visit the Ministry website and complete the online application form.

Contact monika.lawson@education.govt.nz for any application-related enquiries. For qualification and study-related queries contact the tertiary providers directly.

This week we discussed

How to reference sources for the EAP writing unit standard 22749. Thank you to all who posted and to Sue Edwards for sharing APA version 7 with us.

Kathryn asked about using naturally occurring evidence to assess the EAP standard 22751. It would be great to hear your opinions on this. My first thoughts are that

  • The texts read will have to meet the requirements of the Guidance Information particularly in terms of CEFR level, language level, length and number of texts

  • There has to be an appropriate academic purpose for reading and a research question

  • The tasks related to the reading must produce evidence to meet the Performance Criteria

I am keen to hear other opinions and advice. Has anyone else tried to use naturally occurring evidence to assess this standard?

Alana asked about digital learning tools.Once again our wonderful community responded with lots of ideas. Many thanks.  Some of you may find the New General Service List Project useful. It has links to already prepared tools in Memrise and Quizlet.

Finally Sally asked about incorporating Horticulture standards into English language learning classes. What a great idea and it seem quite a few other teachers do something similar. Keep the ideas coming.

Secondary Literacy Online shared a link to an article called Real Time Teaching which is downloadable here. This is a great article that looks at responding to errors including the do’s and don'ts!

Keep well everyone
