Term 4, Week 7: The Draft Literacy Standards

  • Public
Last updated by Breda Matthews

Hi everyone,

This week Sue asked where she could buy graded readers. Thank you to all who replied. Suggestions included

Our other main discussion centred around the release of the Draft Literacy Standards for consultation.

  • Consultation is open from 18th November to 18th December only.

  • In 2021 assessment tasks will be developed and trialled

  • In 2023 the standards will replace the current literacy standards

A couple of questions have come up regarding the EAP standards. Currently the EAP standards can be used to credential literacy in a similar way to evidence from other subjects. This will no longer be the case after 2023 BUT the EAP standards will continue to be offered and, I hope, used in schools.

This consultation is your only opportunity to provide feedback. At this time there are no plans for a further round of consultation which is why taking this opportunity is essential.

TESOLANZ will be holding an online Zoom meeting to discuss the draft standards. All are welcome to attend.

The other topic of interest is the NCEA Change Package. I am keen to hear your thoughts.

Reminders

TESSOL Tuition Fee Scholarship Applications Extended until 30th November. If you are considering further study at all I highly recommend this course. The online application form for TESSOL tuition fees scholarships for 2021 is available on the Ministry website.

Don’t forget to complete the TESOLANZ sector survey. The information gathered will be used to inform professional development offered in the regions, help TESOLANZ advocate for the sector, and author a strategic plan to inform TESOLANZ’s work over the next two years. You can complete the survey here.

Professional development for teacher aides

Wintec is able to offer fees scholarships for teacher aides/learning assistants to study on the Grad Cert TESOL in 2021, They are having an information afternoon about the programme on Tuesday 1st of December. The link for people who want to come to that is on the Wintec web site.
