Hi everyone,

    I hope you and your students all enjoyed the Chinese New year celebrations.

 

Last week  I was asked about the posts from other communities that I share with you e.g. Primary ESOL Online, Literacy Online and English Online. Links to external sites such as NZQA will work. However the upgrade to the listserve means that you cannot read someone’s post to Primary ESOL Online unless you are a member of that community. Whilst this is an extra step to take, it does protest everyone’s security.

Last week Heathers asked how long we have to keep student records for. I have done a bit of research and received the following answer

 

A school will need to keep ELLP records for 7 years from an application for funding per 2.8 of the School Records Retention and Disposal Schedule

 

If scores for individual students are kept separately on the student’s progress record, this need only be kept as long as the school deems appropriate per 1.5 of the School Records Retention and Disposal Schedule.

 

Information forwarded to the Ministry for the purpose of ESOL funding must be kept by the Ministry for 7 years per 5.4 of National Office Retention and Disposal Schedule - Final and General Disposal Authorities.

Bev Steward shared a link to an Edutopia article on Decoding the teenage brain that she thinks will be a useful formative task for students studying this topic for Level 4 EAP standards. Thanks Bev.  

 

Another site to keep an eye on for useful articles Noted. The text level tend to be too high for summative purposes, they could also be used for formative purposes.

 

Rosemary also asked if the assessment support material on the NZQA site was up-to-date. The assessment support materials AND the exemplars refer to the EXPIRING unit standards. New material has been written and will be published soon. In the meantime I’d encourage you to read the new standards carefully. In particular

  • Note any changes in CEFR level

  • Changes in length of text to be read or written and for oral text the time of the oral output

  • Changes to performance criteria (formerly evidence requirements). Are there any new performance criteria? For graded standards have an performance criteria moved for example are they still part of the achieved criteria? Has the wording of performance criteria changed and what will this mean for types of questions that might be asked and how assessment schedules will be written?

  • ALWAYS check the standard and version number. Rule of thumb, standards with ‘old’ numbers e.g. 28068 will be version 3, standards with entirely new numbers, usually starting with a a 3, e.g. 31024, will be version 1.
