Hi everyone,

Last week the Ministry of Education Update and two surveys asking for your responses were posted.

The first survey was in regard to the proposed NZQA Roadshow. Please complete this if you haven’t already done so. This survey resulted in a number of post from people who would prefer it to be held on a weekday. Read this thread here.

Whilst I absolutely understand people’s feelings on this, the cross sector nature of the meeting meant that Saturday worked for the largest number of people.

In this context Annette Vartha suggested moving to online webinars. A great idea, Annette. How can we make this happen?

Yun Xue asked who can use the EAP standards? If you didn’t read the reply, the EAP standards sit in their own domain and can be used by any student regardless of language group.

Annette also asked about using vocabulary profilers to measure texts against the vocabulary levels and the CEFR.

  • Rosemary Cleary suggested using Rewordify

  • Two tools have been recommended to me recently for this purpose. They are:

I’d be interested to see the results for your texts using these tools Annette.

Lynda Rendall continued our discussion around digital assessment and how this will impact on ELLs.

And finally I asked our community to provide feedback on widening the membership or the English Language Unit Standards  and the EAP VLN Groups. There have been 30+ responses so far with people in favour of opening membership to tertiary but not to private training establishments. If you are a member of these groups, please fill out the survey. Click here to find it. There are only 5 questions!

On other communities

Primary ESOL Online shared Janet’s post on course design.

Secondary Literacy Online asked Do we constantly stress about test scores?

Have a great week
