Week 6: Asking and answering questions

Last updated by Breda Matthews

Hi everyone,

Apologies for the late arrival of this update, rain and internet issues have abounded. I hope you are all well and dry!

Last week Julie Luxton provided information about NZQA Best practice workshop in Hamilton. Sufficient numbers will be needed to hold this workshop. Julie has asked if you could complete this Survey Monkey so that she can provide NZQA with a list of people who would like to attend.

There has been a wee trend of sending your questions directly to me rather than posting online. Can I say that there is not one question I have seen that would not be

  1. being asked by other teacher

  2. benefit from input from our community.

Please be brave and help our community by by posting your questions to  our community.

The email to use is secondaryesol@lists.tki.org.nz

Also great to see so many new members of our VLN communities. If you are awaiting membership, please check that you have completed your profile - at least your name, and a school email as we need to verify that you are teaching in a New Zealand secondary school. This is to ensure security of the assessment resources teachers are sharing.

I am repeating last week’s Very Important News - because it is!

NZQA are going to review the EL unit standards. This follows hot on the foot of the NZCEL review and the EAP review. It is essential that panel members include secondary teachers who have prepared students for and assessed against the EL unit standards. Please consider applying and, if you would like to discuss what this might involve, feel free to contact me. Detail of the review are below.

NZQA have invited expressions of interest in contributing to the review, either as a member of the review panel or as part of the supporting email network. Members of the email network will receive regular updates with opportunities to contribute feedback, opinions, and ideas. If you wish to be included in this e-network, please email  englishlanguage.reviewnzqa.govt.nz.

The purpose of this standards review is to ensure that:

  • the unit standards remain fit for purpose

  • there is a suite of unit standards suitable for those who wish to use them as assessment tools in programmes towards the New Zealand Certificates in English Language.

NZQA will pay a fee for service to panellists, including for phone/Skype conference calls, and we meet travel and accommodation expenses.

More information about the review and access to the application form for review panel membership can be found on the webpage for Review of English Language unit standards. The closing date for applications is 9am, Monday 13 March. Applicants will be notified as soon as practical after the closing date.

If you would like to receive information and updates about the review, please send a message the review mailbox asking to be added to the email network, at: englishlanguage.reviewnzqa.govt.nz.

Please pass this message on through your networks - the more people who know about this, the better!
