Week 4: Tonga Language Week and provision for very new ELLs

Last updated by Breda Matthews

Hi everyone,

The previous week was quite but last week was a hive of activity with lots of great questions and sharing.

We discussed

The relationship between Literacy unit standards and English language unit standards.  As Julie Luxton pointed out this is complex issue and there is no direct one-for-one correspondence.

Athlyn provided us with a helpful link to assist us in understanding the level of the Literacy standards.

Magneshi Narain started an interesting conversation on how to provide appropriately for new arrivals who have limited English language skills and who are timetabled into mainstream classes. Teachers are following a number of options including:

This Ministry page identifies different ways that ESOL funding can be used to support ELLs and is worth reading again if you haven’t already done so.

Suzanne is searching for online resources, preferably with a NZ focus. I’d be interested to hear of any too. There is FLAX but it is really aimed at tertiary.

Heather asked teacher for their experience of using the Oxford Placement Tests.

I shared further information regarding NZQA unit standard workshops. Workshop scheduled for Tuesday October 25th in Auckland will be taking place, although a couple more registrations are still needed.

It is important that teachers register their interest in workshops elsewhere around the country as workshops will not be scheduled until there are enough registrations. You can register at  this link. If you have any difficulties registering contact NZQA direct.

Events

Tonga Language Week / Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e Lea Faka-Tonga takes place in 2016 from from 4 to 10 September. The theme for this year is ‘Fakakoloa ‘a Aotearoa ‘aki ‘a e Loto’i Tonga’ (Enriching Aotearoa with the Tongan Spirit).
