Week 6: NZCEL review and new PD provisions

  • Public
Last updated by Breda Matthews

Hi everyone and welcome back after the long weekend.

Last week Stephanie shared information about a new audio resource for Māori and Samoan

and Juliet shared information about the review of the New Zealand Certificates in English Language (NZCEL) qualifications.

It is important that secondary teachers input into this discussion as review of the NZCELs will be likely to impact on the upcoming review of English Language and English for Academic Purposes standards.

Access to the survey and more information on the 2016 NZCEL review can be accessed on the NZQA website, at the New Zealand Certificates in English Language web page.

Another upcoming change is to PLD provision. There is an article outlining these changes in the current Education Gazette.

Schools, kura and Communities of Learning (CoL) will be able to choose their own facilitator for centrally funded professional learning and development (PLD) and will be able to tailor what they do to meet their particular needs under a new system rolling out this year.

What steps will ESOL departments need to take to ensure that the learning needs of ELLs and the required PD to action this are adequately provided for in the new system?

I would urge you to discuss both the NZCEL review and changes to PLD provisions in your departments and ESOL PLD clusters and on this community.

A new question has come in from Angela regarding the use of word processing. Please share how your department deals with this issue.

On other communities

On Secondary Literacy Online Alana shared some points on improving writing by the use of nominalisation as well as Literacy strategies for Maths and Science. Check out here post here.

Have a great week
