2016: Week 3 - Keeping up to date

Hi everyone,

Welcome back to 2016.  As the year begins I am keen to know what the ‘hot topics’ are for you and your school.  Share your ideas, thoughts and requests on this Padlet Wall.

One topic that comes to my mind is how to identify and meet my professional development needs in 2016.  I’d urge teachers to TESOLANZ  and join your local branch for networking, workshops and presentations. You can also stay up to date with TESOLANZ news and branch newsletters, get access to the latest research www.tesolanz.or.nz

Another way of accessing up-to-date research are West Ed’s R and D alerts  which you can access here. (http://www.wested.org/rd-alert-online/. These are American but there are some wonderful gems in their materials.

You will all know that the English Language unit standards are now online as version 2. There are some standards that require only minimal changes but the process of reviewing assessments task also provides the opportunity to undertake some quality assessment - what worked, what needs to be changed.

Hopefully you have all had a relaxing and restful break over the holidays. However for many around the world this has not been the case. Some of us will have new students from affected areas, others may have students who have family members who have been impacted. I recently read an Education Week article which urged schools to consider the needs of Muslim students to ensure that they do not feel singled out for example in current affairs discussions or who might be subject to harassment. It is certainly worthwhile raising awareness of this issue with the staff in schools and developing agreed ways to handle any situations that arise.

Have a great week and don't forget to share your hot topics on our Padlet Wall.
