Weekly update 3rd November, 2015

Hi everyone,
Last week discussed good grammar sites for students and added some to out doc Tools for ELLs and their teachers.  Online tools are great for repetition of particular items. It also makes sense to maximise student learning by utilising time outside the classroom given that ELLs have to catch up with their peers in as short a time as possible. However I think it is important to remember that grammatical items practised should be firmly embedded in the text type that students are working with.

recent meta-analysis of research indicated that traditional grammar instruction was unlikely to improve students writing. Recently I have been reading Eli Hinkel who has identified the grammar and vocabulary students need to write in a academic context - well worth reading.

On Primary ESOL Online Janet discussed supporting Syrian students. This followed up on a question from Nan Cooper that we also discussed - see this thread.

The English Language Intensive Programme is great starting point for any teacher working with very new ELLs. The resource is available online and contains very comprehensive suggestions on working with new ELLs in the Foundation section starting right from developing awareness of different cultural expectations, organsing work, letter formation and onwards. You can access ELIP here.

A new question - Shirley has asked about preparing primary age ELLs for transitioning to high school. Any answers our there? What would you recommend?

In her Pasifika Update Michelle has asked ' What is natural?" Another thought provoking read that asks us to challenge underlying biases.

On Primary ESOL Online Janet shared some upcoming and free PD opportunities as well as strategies to teach vocabulary.

Have a great week.
