Whaea Puāwai wants to know if her students know anything about the history of Māori Language Week and Māori language in general.  Homework tasks are set and the students of Te Kura o Piki Kōtuku are encouraged to browse the net for information.  Our poor Piripi doesn’t have a digital device at home and feels he will not be able to access information as easily as the others.

Whaea Puāwai

Mōrena tātou e tamara mā. Tēnā, nei rā te pātai miriona tāra o te rā nei. Nōnahea i tīmata ai Te Wiki o te Reo Māori?

Good morning everyone. Okay, here’s today’s million dollar question. When did Māori Language Week start?

Piripi

Ū, e mōhio ana ahau! Nō ngā tau waru tekau?

Ooh, I know! During the 1980s?

Rawinia

Kātahi te wowiwowi ko koe! Nō te tau 1982 i tīmata kē ai te kōhanga reo tuatahi, nā reira, nō mua noa atu i tēnā.

Man you’re a drongo! In 1982 the first kōhanga reo started, that means it’s way before then.

Whaea Pūawai

Te hanga nei, me rangahau tātou i ngā takunetanga matua mō tō tātou arero tupuna. Tirohia te pae tukutuku Ngā kōrero a Ipurangi o Aotearoa ki te wāhanga mō Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, ā, ka kōrero anō ai tātou.

It looks like we all need to do research on significant events pertaining to our mother tongue. Look at the New Zealand History website for the section on Māori Language Week and then we’ll discuss some more.

Tāwera

Kua tō te rā! Nō te tau 1975 i tū ai te wiki tuatahi. Wau, kua eke ki te whā tekau te huringa o ngā tau.

Time’s up! In 1975 was the first week. Woah, we’ve reached its 40th anniversary.

Rawinia

E hika, kua tika ō whika! Whaea, ko wai mā ianei Te Hōhaieti Reo Māori?

Gee, you can add! Miss, so who is the Te Reo Māori Society?

Whaea Puāwai

Tō pākiki mārika, e kō.  Nā reira, kua rangona te pātai a Rā hei mahi kāinga mā koutou i te pō nei. He wae kai pakiaka ō tātou.

Lovin’ your inquiring mind, young lady. Right, you’ve heard Rā’s question which will be your homework for tonight. Let’s be productive people.

Piripi

Kāpātaua he pūrere matihiko tāku i te kāinga e tere whakaoti ai te mahi kāinga.

If only I had a digital device at home so I could do my homework fast as.

TMoA DocTe Marautanga o Aotearoa:

Hei tauira noa iho:  Mā te kaiako e whakahāngai atu ki (t)ōna reanga.

Hei mahi 1:

I ahu mai ‘Te Wiki o te Reo Māori’ i hea?  Rangahaua te takenga mai, te pūtakenga mai o ‘Te Wiki o te Reo Māori’. Ka whakaatu ā-waha mā tētahi ‘panahiko Kūkara’ tāu i kite ai, tāu i mārama ai.

Where did the ‘Māori Language Week’ originate from?  Research the origins, the establishing of the ‘Māori Language Week’.  Give an oral presentation using ‘Google Slides’ to share these findings.

Hei mahi 2:

Me wānanga tahi, me hanga tahi te akomanga i tētahi Puka Kūkara e kohi raraunga ai e pā ana ki te whai hua o Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Ka kōrerohia tahingia ngā putanga, me te whiriwhiri āe rānei, kāore rānei ōna hua. Ina mutu ana te whakatau, ka whakapā atu ki Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori ki te whakatakoto i ngā kōrero nei.

Confer and create a joint classroom Google Form, to collect data about the worth of the Māori Language Week.  Collectively discuss the outcome and consider whether or not it has any merit.  From this decision, contact The Māori Language Commission and share these findings.
