Last updated by Moana Timoko

Te Whakataki:

Ka moata rawa te oho i ngā noho ā-kura! Taki whai mai i te māpu nei i a rātou e takahi ana i tētahi ara roa i te whenua. Ka raru pai a Piripi i te oho moata, i te karori haere hoki. Heoi anō, ka tautāwhitia ia e ōna hoa me ā rātou mahi akiaki i a ia.

School trips always have early wake ups!  Join the crew as they venture off on a long trek to see the surrounding land.  Piripi has some trouble with waking so early and also throughout the duration of the walk.  However, he is supported by his peers and is very appreciative of their encouraging efforts.

Auē, Matua te mōata hoki! Kei te kati tonu ōku whatu.

Gees, it’s early, Matua! My eyes are still closed.

Matua Hōhepa

Āe, kei te kite atu, e tama.  Kua hē katoa ō pātene. Tō waimārie kei a koe ō hū tika mō te hīkoi roa.

I can see that boy. Your buttons are done up all wrong. You are lucky you have the right shoes for our long walk.

Tāwera

Āe, Matua. Nāku ōna hū i kawe mai, i te mea, i wareware i a ia. I  mau hānara noa iho ia.

Yep, Sir.  I brought his shoes ‘cos he forgot to. He only brought his jandals.

Whaea Puāwai

Ka rawe koe, Tāwera mō te āwhina i tō hoa.  Tēnā, ahakoa kei te pōuri tonu, ā, kāore anō kia maranga a Tamanuiterā, me tīmata moata tātou kia kaua e hinga hei mua i te mutunga o te rā. Kia kitea te waewae tangata, ka wehe tātou. Ka pai, Matua? He tohutohu āu mō te hīkoi?

Too much Tāwera for helping your friend. Right, although it is still dark and the sun is yet to rise, we need to start early so that we don’t pike out before the end of the day. We leave as soon as it’s daylight. All goods, Matua? Do you have any instructions for the walk?

Matua Hōhepa

Kia ora anō, Whaea. Āe. I ngā wā katoa me whai mai i ahau me ngā takirua i whakarite mō te hīkoi ki tātahi inanahi. Ko Whaea Puāwai e tiaki nei i te whiore o tō tātou tira. Me tūpato i ngā paritū, ā, i ētahi wāhi he tokatoka te papa, he pōruru rānei te ara hīkoi. Ka pai, kua awatea ināianei, hoake tātou.

Thank you Whaea. Yes. You must follow me at all times in the pairs we organised for our walk to the beach. Whaea Puāwai will look after the tail of our group. Be careful of the cliffs and in some places it's rocky and in others the pathway is bushy. Ok, it’s daylight now, let’s go.

Piripi

Aiii, kei te mamae ōku waewae!

Argh, my legs hurt!

Tāwera

Kia kaha, Piripi. Kua tata tātou ki te tuakahiwi.

Harden up, Piripi. We are nearly at the ridge of the hill.

Piripi

Āe, engari he tino paripari tēnei ara. Kua hē te manawa.

Yeah, but this pathway is steep as. I’m haddit.

Hineata

Kia kaha, e hoa. Māku tō peke e mau kia tae rā anō ki te taumata.

Come on, bro. I’ll take your bag to the top of the hill.

Piripi

Ā, Hineata, kia ora mō tēnā.

Oh, thanks, Hineata.

Rawinia

Kei kō tata atu te taumata. Kāore e roa.

The top is just a little further on. Not far.

Hineata

Auē, he whenua rangatira te tirohanga nei. Kei kō a Karioi.  Arā a Pirongia, ā, ki te huri pērā ka kiteate tiketike o Taranaki. Whū! Ko Tainui Awhiro, ngunguru i te pō, ngunguru i te ao!

The land looks so peaceful from this view. Karioi is just there.  There’s Pirongia and if you turn that way you can see the peak of Taranaki. Whū! Tainui, with the continual grumbling sounds heard in the day and night from the sea!

Piripi

(E kimi hā ana) Hūrei, kua tae ahau. Ehara taku toa i te toa taki, engari he toa takitini. Me mihi ka tika ki ōku hoa mō te akiaki mai i ahau. Mei kore ko koutou kua kore e kite i tēnei whenua taurikura!

(Breathing heavily) Yaay, Imade it.

Success is not the work of one, but the work of many. Thanks heaps to all of you for encouraging me. If it wasn’t for you all I wouldn’t have been able to see this beautiful land.
