What are 'tikanga' and who gets to decide which tikanga is best to follow in different situations? At school, a long standing tikanga has been making sure you get to your lessons on time. You will hear in the short play the teacher's words holding Piripi accountable for turning up late to kapa haka practice. Let's take a look at what's being served up in this lesson!

Hello everybody. This is our first practice. The main reason for this hui is to set the protocols as we focus on the school concert at the end of term three.

Let us be taken by the spirit of joy and entertainment!

Ka tuwhera mai te kūaha, ā, ka kuhu mai a Piripi me tana whakamā.

Piripi

Mō taku tōmuri, Whaea. Kāore i aro i au e taima.

Sorry Whaea for being late. I wasn’t paying attention to the time.

Tēnā, me ūpoko pakaru te karawhiu me tōngakingaki hoki kia tutuki pai ai ō tātou whāinga.

Piripi, if you read the notices properly you would know what time to be here. Everybody, with hard work and commitment we will achieve our goals.

Piripi

Āe, mō tōku hē, Whaea.

Yes, sorry, Whaea.

Rawinia

(E kōhimuhimu ana)

Pai kare e hoa, nāku koe i whakamaumahara.

(Whispering)

Jingoes, I reminded you, bro.

Matua Hōhepa

Tekau wiki anahe ki a tātou. Ka whakaako māua ko Whaea Puāwai i ngā waiata me ngā ringa e hāngai ana. Me tae mai koutou ki ngā parakatihi hei ngā wā tika. Kia rite koutou ki te tōtara! Akona ngā kupu me ngā nekehanga.

We only have ten weeks. Whaea Puāwai and I will teach the waiata and actions. You must attend practices at the right time. Be like a tōtara, learn the words and the movements.

Just so you all know, we will soon be choosing a new female leader. Tāwera is still our male leader but because Amiria left us last year we need to choose a new leader. This is a great opportunity for you aspiring leaders. By working hard, a strong heart and standing tall, it will be obvious who will fill that position.
