Weekly update 2nd March, 2015

Hi everyone,
A quiet week on our community. I guess you were all finalising your ESOL A/F return for the Ministry! Always a busy time of year although I have found the new system much more user friendly and much easier to use with mainstream teachers.

We have one outstanding query from Rose regarding student assessments and ESOL and EL unit standards. The student assessment task was originally completed for an ESOL standard in 2014 but that was not not submitted, as a task for and EL standard this year. Your thoughts please - are you in a similar situation and how are you handling this?

Remember you can only access the conversations if you have logged in to the archive on ESOL Online - using the following:

Having said that I have found that having logged in once, I have not had to do so again. Hope that works for you too.

On our VLN groups

English Language Unit Standards Group has seen new resources posted.

I posted a blog on ELLs and Modern Learning Environments. If you are not a member of our VLN groups please consider joining. However, if you decide not to join, you can find my blog at at http://bredamatthews.blogspot.co.nz/

On other communities

English OnlIne discussed classroom management with some great suggestions for reinforcing positive behaviour

and recommended ClassDojo (https://www.classdojo.com/) an electronic system of recording positive and negative behaviour which is free and it can be run off your phone or on the computer/projector - thanks to David for this suggestion.

English Online also discussed suitable texts to use with ELLs.

Previously on Literacy Online Anne Kenneally shared an article on the use of Big Books. Did you know that you can borrow Big Books from Kohia Teachers Centre. I have found the texts on non fiction subjects great support to use with students studying mainstream subjects.

Have a great week.

Kind regards
Breda
