Hi everyone,

Welcome to what will be for most of you week 2. We had a quiet week on the Secondary ESOL Online mailing list but I know that most of you are awash with new students and lots of work.
Knowing how hard you are working has encouraged me to share how I have begun to control my own workload. Last year I was privileged to attend Petronella Townsend and Simon Crosby's presentation at CLESOL in which they shared their suggestions for dealing with workload issues. This talk made a significant difference to my own work. It made me realise that my expectations of myself were often unrealistic and impacted negatively on both my effectiveness at work and my personal time.
More recently I've been reading about 'manageable change'. This is a far reaching concept that will be much written about this year but I have used to to frame my priorities for change in my own practice. I have used it to ensure that I determine what is key and to focus on that and the resolve not to descend into 'headless chicken' mode! Making a positive decision about how much change I can effectively implement has empowered me to feel less stress about those issues I have decided are important but not my priority this term.
So what are the changes that you are going to prioritise this term or year?
