Last updated by Breda Matthews

Hi everyone,

We had a quite week on the listserve no doubt everyone is engaged in the flurry of last activities before seniors leave, always a busy time!

We shared a number of PD opportunities including Julie Luxtons' upcoming talk at WATESOL on Enhancing Pasifika Student Writing Achievement

and I reminded everyone that the closing date for TESSOL scholarships is 31st October. Please encourage your mainstream and ESOL colleagues to give this serious consideration as these are wonderful courses that open a wealth of opportunities for teachers and their students.

Michelle Johansson shared the Pasifika Update

and alerted us to a new Samoan Heroes resource.

On other communities

On Primary ESOL Online Janet continues with her greta posts and blogs - If you are not on the Primary ESOL Online  listerve it is well worth joining the Primary ESOL Online VLN group so that you can check these out.

Literacy Online discussed the overuse of WALTs (What we are learning today statements)

and linked to a video of students discussing WALTs. IThe students' perspectives are very insightful and  thought provoking.

On the same page I enjoyed the video on Learning to Learn in English in which a teacher discusses the use of KWL charts to empower students to engage more actively in their own learning.

Secondary Literacy Online posted a guest blog from Dr Ian Hunter on how to make a student a better writer.

English Online have been working on a shared document that may be of interest to those of you working towards English AS externals. The document looks at the 'what' and 'how' of the three common English externals.

Have a great week
Breda
