Weekly update 9th June

Hi everyone,

Well the end of term seems to be approaching fast. For me too fast when I look at the amount of work I still have to get through!

Last week I posted advance notice of the next AKTESOL event on Thursday 19th June at AIS St Helens (Mt Albert).

There is an ongoing conversation on assisting students in Maths (probability) lessons.

On other communities

At this point in the year all of our communities seem are considering how we teach and the importance of student ownership in effective learning.

Literacy Online shared a blog post from Sheena Cameron on personal choice of writing topics that made me reflect on how often students in my classes had this opportunity. I wondered if my focus on the quality of the end 'product' sometimes limited student freedom and what would be the consequence of allowing more student choice. Certainly students are likely to produce better oral and written texts on familiar topics - time for me to dig deeper into my own practice.

On Secondary Literacy Online Alana started a discussion on reading for understanding. Great links and downloadable resources too!

As ever English Online is busy. One conversation that is in a similar vein to Secondary Literacy Online is Personal reading to assess or not assess?

On Primary ESOL Online Janet linked us to 5 new Best Evidence Synthesis Exemplars. Scroll down this page to find BES 1 Developing Communities of Mathematical Inquiry.

Have a great week.
