Hi everyone,

Goodness is it week 5 already! Some great conversations last week including:
We also shared
Our VLN Secondary ESOL Online group is growing as it the group set up to discuss the transition to EL unit standards assessments. You need to contact your regional facilitators to join the EL unit standards assessment group but the Secondary ESOL Online group is open to all.

Last week we discussed initial and diagnostic assessment. This week I would like to consider what we do with the data the assessments have generated. In particular how we use it to inform planning for learning and to provide for different learners.

I find reviewing data gathered from a variety of sources, including initial assessment data, enables me to identify not only what students can now do but also next steps for individual learners and groups of learners.

There are a lot of documents to help me do this but I find the ELLP matrices and ELIP particularly useful in identifying next steps for learners and to suggest strategies to assist students achieve their goals.

So how does your department use assessment data to inform teaching and learning?

On other communities
Primary ESOL also discussed assessments for funding and placement and are discussing resource to support Home School Partnership initiatives.

On Secondary Literacy Online Alana posed some interesting and challenging questions.

Have a great week
Breda
