Tāpasa We’re all familiar with Tätaiako: Cultural Competencies for Teachers of Mäori Learners a framework that highlights how to enrich teacher relationships and engagement with Māori learners and with their whānau and iwi. The Tapasā: Cultural Competencies Framework for Teachers of Pacific Learners is designed to do the same, by building the capability of all teachers of Pacific learners.

Tapasā is a Samoan term. The closest English language translation would be the word ‘compass’. (p. 5) The framework is designed to support teachers to become more culturally aware, confident, and competent when engaging with Pacific learners and their parents, families, and communities. Plan to include all Pasifika learners by:

  • knowing your Pasifika students
  • integrating their language and culture into the classroom environment
  • providing opportunities for students to personalise learning and create successful learning pathways
  • establishing relationships with parents and families to support learning.

(Enabling e-Learning (TKI) Using digital technologies to support Pasifika students' learning)

Ngā turu within Tapasā describes behaviours and understandings at different stages of the teaching journey. Each of the turu is distinct, in practice they are interwoven and can be observed to be occurring all at the same time in a learning activity. Indicators for student teachers, beginning teachers, experienced teachers and leaders with correlations to our Codes and Standards as well as Tātaiako.

Turu 1: Identities, languages and cultures - Demonstrate awareness of the diverse and ethnic-specific identities, languages and cultures of Pacific learners.

Turu 2: Collaborative and respectful relationships and professional behaviours - Establishes and maintains collaborative and respectful relationships and professional behaviours that enhance learning and wellbeing for Pacific learners.

Turu 3: Effective pedagogies for Pacific learners - Implements pedagogical approaches that are effective for Pacific learners.

The Tapasā: Cultural Competencies Framework for Teachers of Pacific Learners resource also includes some case studies, guiding questions and useful links/resources.

Have you already begun using the Tāpasa framework in your school/kura? Has anyone managed to create a digital template that combines the Codes and Standards, Tātaiako and Tāpasa? Please feel free to share below smiley.
