Hi Everyone, I am keen to make contact with schools that are using Lightspeed. We have signed up for this but am wanting ideas on how schools are using the system and how they set up their ipads initially, any pit falls or quick tips appreciated.

    Hi Tracey,

We are looking at Lightspeed currently. Can I ask what you think of it and how many ipads you are currently managing?

    I'm sorry Karen and Tracy,

This doesn't seem to be a very active thread.

I have never had contact with any schools that use Lightspeed either.

Can I suggest you contact the CLA- Connected Learning Advisory

    http://elearning.tki.org.nz/Ministry-initiatives/Connected-Learning-Advisory-service

They are a free service- you can ring them up and they give you impartial advice about technical type things like this and would know other schools to put you in contact with.

    They are very clever people!!

    :-)

Hi Tracey (just re-read the date!)  And Karen

I'm using Casper.  I'm not sure how similar it is to Lightspeed.  I manage 143 iPads broken down into 7 Management groups (Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, Montessori, Y7-8, and Assistive Tech).  I have home folders on each iPad, Literacy, Numeracy, Sharing Learning, Recording, Coding, Google/Apple) and Drive, Safari and QR Reader on the Home Bar.  The apps are not the same for each group, so I need to add the app (using VPP) then add it to the appropriate folder on each profile that requires it.  It seems a bit of double handling but once they're all trucking along, I shouldn't have to add lots more apps.  I have Restrictions and wifi settings pushed out to ALL iPads, but exclude the Assistive Tech ones, as they need their GAFE accounts on them.

I don't use User accounts.  It is what it is so Teachers don't need to manage them.

Oh we have a Mac Mini with Configurator that acts as our Server to push out apps, updates etc.  We are a Windows domain otherwise.

Feel free to ask me anymore questions.

    Hi Karen and Tracey,

We have used lightspeed with 250 iPads at our school. It's a great MDM and beats Meraki hands down. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. Sorry this thread only just caught my eye!

And yes the CLA are awesome and my go-to with questions like this!!

I don't want to muddy the waters though assume that those following this thread (in the past month!) are interested in or using MDMs to manage iPads. It was great to see Rachel's reflection of Lightspeed vs Meraki

An emerging one seems to be http://manager.mosyle.com

It seems to tick the boxes and is to a certain level, free (sometimes free costs?) Anyone any experience?

Now is a good time to research with three terms to prepare for major changes

We began using Lightspeed at Springston School from the beginning of this year. It was set up by Cyclone (our Tech people) over the Christmas break and was ready to go for the start of this year.

We have around 70 iPads in the system, grouped according to learning teams, and with subgroups within those for older iPad2s and newer iPad Airs (because some apps can't go on older devices).

I had been waiting for an MDM that could place apps in folders and on screens where we want them - not using the scatter-gun approach. We do use a lot of apps - mostly open-ended and creative ones.

Lightspeed also locks down the placement of apps on a device so they can't be messed with by students.

Apps and other settings are quickly and easily pinged out to apps wirelessly. It has saved me hours of time (though I did spend many hours at the start saying what apps we had that needed to be transferred from VPP codes into licences, saying which Team was to have which app and in which folder etc).

A feature that we discovered this week, is to be able to add Homescreen bookmarks (with whatever image design you want) to websites you might want students to go to. And lock these where you want them to be placed. So, it's not just apps.

There is quite a large set up cost, but it is a big job if you're complicated like us/me. And there is an ongoing per iPad cost. But, so far, it's been very worth it and we're very happy.

Worked with a  school last year and recommended Lightspeed for the same reason(s) as Carol.  Set up through Cyclone (similar cost) as well and the school is very happy.  They were spending a huge amount of time (=$) trying to manage the iPads themselves.

    Similar experience.

Lightspeed and Casper (now called Jamf Pro) are great and very capable MDM's. There's a couple more that you should also be aware of that are also worth looking at:

    Zuludesk.  https://zuludesk.com

    TabPilot.  http://www.tabpilot.com

If there was a single piece of advice that I could give anyone who's considering an MDM it would be to not go with a free one. Meraki was free and for all those schools that picked it up when it was free, most are reversing course and paying for something like Lightspeed.
