Introduction

Inclusion is one of the eight principles in the New Zealand Curriculum and therefore is a critical component in all strategic decision making as well as in teaching and learning.

Inclusive education is where all children and young people are engaged and achieve through being present, participating, learning and belonging.

Using digital technologies to enable an inclusive environment

Digital technologies can be used to help develop an inclusive classroom environment. For example accessibility can be increased by providing cloud-based versions of key content and giving students access to use technology in their learning. With digital technology students can:

  • access content at any time and anywhere in order to learn, revise and re-learn as necessary

  • use a format that is best suited to them

  • use multimedia to support a variety of learners  (e.g.caption on videos or include descriptive text with images)

  • use text-to-speech software

  • use speech recognition software

  • magnify content—both text and images

  • use other assistive technologies as required.

    This week on Twitter, Chrissie Butler shared student perspectives on why UDL is useful http://www.bcsc.k12.in.us/Page/13054

    This got me thinking about how I can involve our students more in designing their learning and get them thinking about UDL. 

    I spoke to them about the 3 principles of UDL and the children made up the acronym "PEE" which they found highly amusing! (presentation, expression and engagement) 

    I shared "example by squirrel" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bc-5FCd7t0U Students really got this and said things like, "we all learn in different ways and need different tools to help us to get where we need to be"

    For the next few weeks, we will focus on the "p" asking the children did you understand what I was teaching you? What worked for you? How could I improve my lesson? Did you understand?

    Thanks for sharing this Nic. It's great the way you engaged you students in the principles of UDL so they know what's going on as well. 

    Are you regularly asking for student voice back around the "presentation" aspect? How are you doing this? Is it through discussion, raising of hands, survey, digitally? How are you encouraging all students' voices to be heard?

    I'm looking forward to hearing further how this goes.

    Nic - I like the thinking re students designing their own learning. I have been thinking a lot about types of apps/software too - those with pre-made activities versus those that allow students to be more creative (consume v create).

     

    I often get asked if I know of any good apps for teaching a specific skill - for example maths skills or consonant blends. I don't doubt that there are a number of great apps on this topic available amongst the million or so in the app store BUT I have seen situations where a student is isolated in the corner with their iPad “learning” by spending much of their time playing on pre-made activities.

     

    I would love to hear about ways that teachers have used technology to support students be creative, to tell their own stories and to socialise with their peers.

     

    An example would be to have the students make their own talking book about consonant blends (using an app like bookcreator).
