2. Does anyone have any idea how many Primary and Secondary Schools are using mobile learning devices in NZ?
Thanks for your help
Jess
Our school had a policy of mobile devices being kept locked up at the office, while we are a 1:1 school. So every students has a chromebook, but not alowed to use their mobile devices.
We are changing! Students consistantly want to take pictures, or use twitter for learning, and these are the devices they use more than their chromebooks. Sure there are disadvantages, and we are aware of them, but because the majority of students don't have data, or can't afford to use their data regularly, this major issue (own data connection) is not very relevant for us.
I think most of us would agree, the main reason is portability vs mobility. As education continues to extend beyond the classroom, we need devices that are more than just portable. Having a device we can use that is portable is important, but I belive that having a device that is highly mobile and can be used anywhere, at anytime is the key for learning. We shouldn't restrict our learning because of our devices. ICT is there to enhance learning, so mobile devices certianly have their place.

Thanks for the links Hamish.
To clarify where these questions have come from there is currently there is debate within our community as to whether we use 1-1 devices that are hardwired and fixed in the classrooms (no wifi) or devices that are wireless and portable therefore able to be used anywhere in the school.
We are just putting together information around both of these options.
No problem Jess.
I think you'll need to go back to your pedagogy and what you/ your board/ your students want. Do you involve students in this discussion?
Do you want a classroom where learning happens indoors..? or do you want learning to happen in and outside of the classroom? ?
The board/students/staff have an idea on what we would like. We just need to put together as much information as possible to present to our wider community.
