Waterview Connection - going underground with New Zealand's biggest road project 2014 -2017

Welcome to this discussion strand for Waterview Connection, which is part of the LEARNZ group on the VLN.

Get help and ideas about how this works and what to post, including examples of student learning.

In a series of virtual field trips starting 26-28 August 2014 and going through to 2017, LEARNZ can take you and your class underground (virtually) to New Zealand’s biggest roading project.

Get information about the Waterview Connection field trip.

Auckland is our biggest and busiest city. This field trip relates to big ideas like transport, sustainability, roading, urbanisation, environment, business, and the economy.

We look forward to your posts.

Barrie, LEARNZ Project Manager

Looking forward to this trip next week. It's going to be fantastic to get up close to the massive machinery being used to create the Waterview Connection. It will also be a great opportunity to meet some of the experts involved in such an ambitious project and gain insights into how such a project is planned and carried out.

We'll start the field trip at 7am on Monday morning with a safety induction course - see you there.

Haere mai and welcome to the second Waterview Connection field trip. You can join me back in Auckland to see how New Zealand's largest road project is progressing. On the first field trip you met Alice the Tunnel Boring Machine as she carved and constructed the first southbound tunnel. She is now working on the northbound tunnel and during the field trip you will catch up with her and see what's happening at the northern end of the project.

On 4-6 August you and your class can get close to the action and meet expert engineers, construction workers, safety personnel and managers. You will gain an appreciation for the importance of this project, the challenges it involves and its impact on Auckland.

Check out the website to find out more and to book your audioconference.

Looking forward to seeing you on the trip and hearing your ideas of how you will use the field trip with your class.

    Nāku noa,

Shelley the LEARNZ field trip teacher.

Kia ora koutou, It's hard to believe it's a year since our last visit to the Waterview Connection construction site in Auckland. You can join us again on the third and final field trip to catch up with what has happened on site and how New Zealand's largest ever road project will impact on Auckland. You will be able to drive through the tunnels before they open in early 2017 and take a closer look at the urban design that will improve the area for local residents.

Watch the introductory video for the third Waterview Connection field trip and join us on 13-15 September.
