How have you been celebrating Maths week at your school? Please share your exciting ideas.
We had a daily estimation challenge. Different teachers did a challenge at lunchtime and the students had to estimate how long/how much they could do. We also had a daily visit from the 'Math's Wizard' (our school caretaker) and he asked us maths questions. We topped off the week with a great assembly where some of our teachers vs students in a 'Minute to Win it' challenge.
Kia ora Sarah, Sounds like your school had lots of exciting activities and challenges during Maths week. Great to hear that teachers were competing with students in a minute challenge.
At Mokoia Intermediate we had a daily problem which had students skidding into my office each morning, to win the class prize. So much fun! I did remind some that they could use their email (I'd made a point of emailing each problem to every student).
We also had basic facts activities to fill the teacher ketes and a large jar of jelly beans in the office which students paid 50 c a guess for (money to our kapa haka regional entry funds).
We had a maths scavenger hunt. I his maths problems around the school and each day the children had to find their classes problem and solve it. For the senior children I cretaed QR codes with their problem. On Friday the first child from each class who had all of the correct answers won a prize.
Fiona and Annemarie, These are great ideas ! Great context to use QR codes. Please keep these ideas coming as this will be a great resource for us to implement in our schools.
Just attended financial capability workshop facilitated by Te Toi Tupu facilitators. We explored awesome resources which includes school stories and strategies to implement and integrate financial literacy and build financial capability. http://nzcurriculum.tki.org.nz/Curriculum-resources/Financial-capability.
It was great to hear Mangere Central school's journey in building students' financial capability.
How can we empower our students to be financially sustainable ?
