Just wondering if anyone has set up a class twitter account. Some of my colleagues are keen and need to put some guidelines in place etc.
What works or doesn't work with it?
How are you using them?
wha policies and guidelines are in place?
I haven't done this myself, but I know that a #kidsedchatnz was set up last year on twitter by Pascal Dresse (@PascalDresse). This involved classes tweeting with each other during a set time. Maybe there are some on the VLN who were a part of that?
Cheers
Nathaniel
Hi there Steve,
Yes there are certainly classes using twitter and some great resources on the VLN giving information.
Have a look at
Students using twitter that's outrageous!
and
and this similarly titled thread from early last month.
Have tweeted this thread so I am sure keen tweeters will soon be here sharing their first hand experiences. : )
We are using a lot at our school - but they are all closed communities so I can't share any of the work with you. Last year we trialled a couple of classes and although it didn't really generate much interest for a few days - it spread like wildfire once it got going. Becuase of some of the inappropriate images for young children we use it as a tool to communicate with parents. The parents hold the account and share with thier child at home. The teacher owns the class account so can block out all images e.t.c. My advice is just to pitch in and have a go - it's a great tool. Happy for you to e-mail me and I can attach some letters for parents and screenshots to help teachers

I've been using Twitter with my classes for a few years now. I think the key to success is getting parnets onboard and following. I have run night workshops for parents, including using Twitter.
My students have been heavily involved in a twitter chat (mentioned earlier) #kidsedchatnz. This is a weekly kids chat running on a wednesday 2 - 2.30. We haven't got this back up and running yet - hopefully in the next 2 weeks it should be.

I have also started a Global Class Twitter wiki - schools who are keen to connect have put their class twitter handles here, so might be worth following some of those people/ classes/ schools

And finally - my class from 2012 class twitter handle was @PinehillRm14, its still active, but I am not using it (changed schools).
Yahoo twitter came through : )

Worth contact Kieran Moriarty at Parkvale School. This will be his second year utilising Twitter with his class. Just contact him via his class blog the Tree of Life.
There are some great links here, with lots of practical ideas about how Twitter could be used. Thanks, everyone:-)
To ad to these ideas, it would be great to unpack the purpose for using it .
For example, we know that Twitter - or any micro-blogging software - allows us to:
Hi Karen,
When working with primary school children, do keep in mind our children's age.
Please scroll down to Twitter's policy towards children.

I have a Twitter account with my class https://twitter.com/LittleGiants7, which we use to interact with other classes during #kidsedchatnz.
This week one of my students received positive feedback about his writing from Pascal Dresse during #kidsedchatnz and he is very motivated about doing his best in his writing now. Last year Amy McCauley quoted them in a Storify story, which they were very excited about. This all happened when using our class twitter account and adds to making their learning meaningful.
As my students are 5 year olds, I am the only one knowing the password and I do help them to sign in when they want to connect and share their learning. I also assist them when they post tweets, to make sure everything makes sense.
This is only my second year of using Twitter with my class and although it takes time to get my NE/Year 1 students accustomed to it, this involvement in a chat is adding value to their learning, as there is an audience they can connect with and share their learning with.
