Zippy is an iPad Augmented Reality app where you colour printed pages of the alphabet or objects like a whare. You then aim the iPad at the printed page and it will come alive and read aloud the sounds of the alphabet etc. It’s a bit hard to explain so I made this little video demo.

Sam McNeil posted this to the eLearning Technologies Group about the app Seeing AI- which I downloaded tonight and it is pretty exciting. Sam talks about its capability for visually impaired users and I thought the reading text aloud feature could be really useful for those who find accessing text a challenge as well.

A couple of weeks ago I had one of those "wow" moments when I saw the "Seeing AI" app demo'ed live for me in a presentation (to the MoE funnily enough). It really felt like a moment of science fiction for me.
It's taken me a few days to get back to it but I've downloaded and played with the Seeing AI app on my iPhone today and it's blown my mind.
I don't usually "promote" apps or anything like that (and the fact this is made by Microsoft Research is entirely coincidental), however I share this purely because I can imagine this could literally be a game changer for a visually impaired student or staff member you may work with:

If you have students or staff in your schools that are blind please do consider letting them know of this app (currently, iOS only it would seem). I remember my high school days and there was a boy in my year who was legally blind but could see indistinct shapes. He literally had a mini telescope to help him see text (barely) - an app like this would have revolutionised his schooling I'm sure.

I am working on a list of apps for our school iPads. Hard to narrow it down! We want to stick with creative apps as much as possible, but possibly with one or two maths practice, spelling/phonics practice apps thrown in. Is it possible to have one list of apps suitable for years 1-8? We want to have fewer apps, and focus on using those really well so already thinking of Book Creator, Explain Everything etc. Would appreciate your help!

I would maybe start with what skill would you like to particularly like to focus on?
If it is speaking then using the video camera in selfie mode and playing it back maybe useful- able to self/peer reflect on understanding and learning. Or Puppet Pals where the children can role play and speak
If it is to communicate with whanau in the way of a learning journal then maybe Book Creator with recorded reflections. Or Seesaw.
Can you let us know what in particular you are wanting to target or reinforce for their learning.

Hi I was wondering if anyone had suggestions of IPAD apps that can be used with NE children that are still functioning at 2/3 year old levels. I have apps that are fine for those children within my class that are ready for school but, I am not sure where to go with the few children I have that are quite delayed. I am using the IPADS as part of a play based approach for parts of my teaching day not the whole day. I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

I have just started using the New Zealand version of 'Write about this' with a small focus group of boys. I was struggling to get the boys engaged and excited about writing and they absolutely love this. They can choose from a range of photo prompts or create their own. They can also record their own voice reading their story, its fantastic :)
