The way I see it Adele, there are different levels of inference that are possible from the same text. There are a lot of books and journal stories that do not require complex decoding skills but allow for multiple level inferences. Learners can self differentiate what kind of research they follow their inferences up with and you might even find that GATE and struggling students will choose to collaborate when that inference leads them on a similar path of questioning.

The aim of workshops as I see them, is to open students to developing reading strategies without expecting that every student will have identical outcomes. I love mixed ability learning because kids who are struggling can hear higher level thinking from a peer and GATE kids don't feel alienated by never getting the chance to work with less able peers.
