Thanks Donna, that is a great question which encourages deeper thinking for us as teachers.
Making connections is an important concept in Maths. I am thinking of using Dan Meyer's 101 questions http://www.101qs.com/index.php that promotes students to ask appropriate Maths questions.
Just found 'Build with Chrome' which is a tool that can promote application, generalisation and creativity.
https://www.buildwithchrome.com/
Look forward to hearing more ideas from everyone. What other strategies and tools are we using at the relational and extended abstract levels within the maths programmes ?
That's great news, Manu. I will trial Gagana Samoa. Thanks for the update.

Vanitha

Kia ora, In order to motivate students to learn basic facts, it is important to develop a conceptual understanding and visualisation of these facts. Students will need to understand the patterns and relationships between the numbers. Here is the link to a doc that includes strategies to derive unknown facts from known facts. Students find it easier to memorise basic facts after developing an understanding.
e-ako nzmaths is a good tool to practice basic facts, as it is based on specific needs.
Prototec site seems interesting. I will check it out. Thanks for sharing!
You could explore nzmaths e-ako which Place value/ basic facts/problem solving and 'Thinking blocks' that helps to model and solve Maths problems.

Hi everyone,
#MathschatNZ, New Zealand’s leading twitter chat group for teachers of Mathematics is starting up again for 2015. It will run Wednesday at 8:30pm. (we will usually run on Thursdays). If you are new to twitter, this might be an excellent excuse to get into it. You will need an account to participate and you can click on #MathschatNZ to follow the conversation thread.
This week we are privileged to have the chat moderated by Kristian Giles, the secretary of the Canterbury Mathematical Association.
See you there at 8:30!
Kind regards,
Ben Hilliam

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and ideas regarding the name of this group.
We will change the group to " Maths in the Primary School" as it is easy to locate and encompasses future focused Mathematics and Statistics.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone. Have a well deserved break !
Good thinking, Allanah. Thanks for your support and contribution. Looking forward to collaborating further in the area of future focused Mathematics and Statistics.
