    Hi all,

I really like popplet for maths as it allows you to insert photos of the problem or equipment, create flows of problem solving, sort the popples and you can have multiple people in the one popplet (if you sign up for the web version) It is available on web or as an app.

Here is how I used it to show working in a maths workshop recently.

I photographed the problem and then showed my working in the popples underneath.

    Hi Paula,

There are lots of whiteboard type apps that will allow you to load slides and then annotate over the top.

Have a look at Educreations,  ShowMe, or Explain Everything.

I have been watching Dan Meyer's videos for engaging students in Real Life mathematical problem solving.

Dan admits he spent 6 years teaching maths to students who hated math and has set out to film maths problems in real life settings to hook in maths students.

I love the way he takes all the detail out of the problems and makes the video ask the student the question instead of overloading the student with large quantities of text.

What do you think of his video? Doesn't his presentation style make you want to find out the answer to the maths problem?

How could you use this in your primary maths classroom?

    Hi Rachel,

Mary-Anne Murphy and I used this app in an e-writing classroom workshop we ran at ULearn. Here is the task card we created for participants.

Thanks for this Karen, it clarifies in my mind the changes made and will help me to explain the updates to schools : )

Does it have no sound in any app? In this case then a reset has worked for this problem on one of my students ipods.

One other trap I have been caught is when I think I am recording in an app and then play back there is no sound and them I have found that the app did not have access to the micophone so nothing was recorded. go to settings - privacy - microphone and make sure it is on for all the apps.

    Good luck!

Thanks for sharing this Tania, the experience was an awesome one to be part of. As well as achieving our goal of raising the profile and knowledge around digital citizenship in each of the schools and with the students invloved especially the project had some unexpected spinoff benefits.

    1. The teachers involved (who came to supervise the students from each school) had some time to network and share their stories with each other of how they were working with technology in their schools.

    2. The younger students made some new friends at schools they will be moving onto in years to come.

    3. The independence exhibited by the students made the other teachers involved rethink how they present tasks in a classroom, how they share information and how they dictate what end products should look like.

    4. The older students and adults involved were amazed by the ability and skills of the younger students using the technology.

    5. The students going out and using the community in which they live as part of the project was a new idea to many and was really valuable.

    Lots to ponder : )

    Hi Alana,

I think it will appeal to teenagers, I have certainly used it successfully with Year 7 and 8 and they have loved it.

Voki is an online avatar creator which has more options than tellagami and is web based so can be accessed from any computer. It has the added feature of over 25 langauges to choose from, ESOL useful?
