Hear hear Tony! I first came across Simon Sinek's work with Mark Osborne in my eFellowship year. I think this model is really helpful but think you might gain a bit more insight by exploring the EPS model... and I encourage you to take a look at Julia's positioning system...

I am thrilled to see the focus is centred around the 'why' and the focus is on modern environments as in the pedagogy. We have had the adventure of starting everything from scratch recently with the opening of Shotover Primary School in Queenstown. Every discussion, decision and action has always gone back to the "Why". We were lucky to work with Julia Atkin in January and our work with her simply reinforced how important it is to have shared common beliefs as a team that are then encompassed by the principles. Lastly, the practices and let's be true to ourselves... it is the practices that need to keep changing and be reviewed often so as to ensure everything continues to target the beliefs and principles.

Quick Question: I am just about to set up Hapara TD for next year. Can Picassa run for children without google+?

Hi Glenda - I so agree with what you say about being in the know... I think it is especially important that a principal is aware of the politics of change that is coming so that he/she is able to lead/ nurture their team forward in readiness for any changes affecting the profession. Examples of this would include readiness/ acceptance of national standards and making the most of this process so that teachers accept that it has impact on learning and teaching.

Hi Agnes - I have been reading Capacities Rather than Competencies also. I found it helped me make links to something that my own principal threw into a discussion one day. It was all about making time for people including the community, children and staff. When he touched on the staff, he mentioned this: "when schedules are tight the management team needs to know that I will 'shut the door' or need to priorotise my time but it is hugely important that (what might be considered) the least important person on the team knows that they can have my time anytime. Their concerns, needs, anxieties, etc. are of the utmost importance to them and how they feel that they are percieved...

Another substitution from the paper resource for shared reading is the Connected Series which is now online: https://docs.google.com/a/stclair.school.nz/document/d/1lCdgv_YMyIZx0PIU2jhlHVbLb-gWzvLVfaUYZdDhU_E/edit

I, too would be interested to know how others are integrating the use of e-tools for targeted teaching within your shared book activities.  What apps could be used to support teaching and learning in the shared reading environment?

Thanks, Alannah! I so agree. Could not ever bring myself to delete an individual's blog. I have 3 years of individual blogs floating out there and around a third of them are still being updated. It is the chilren's accounts that we intend to delete once all docs and access to blogs are "handed over". Consultation with the community will hopefully lead to developing a sense of value of the kids' learning...

    Hi Grant! Cool

We have been having regular meetings for parents throughout the year as the transition to the cloud snow balled across the school. This week we will have a meeting for parents again to see what they prefer. I was hoping to offer them a few possibilities but it looks like there are really only two options for us this time around.

I think my preference is to have each caregiver take ownership of their child's folder in the cloud but the USB might feel more tangible for our first transition. I can only imagine what it will be like after 3-4 years of blogging and storing documents in their clouds! What an amazing portfolio they will have.

I love that you have shared your thoughts, Grant. I have tended to be a lurker on the VLN but asking a question has proven invaluable!

    Many thanks,

    Claire

Cool Let me know if you wold be up for some unpacking and brainstorming of this issue...

I have also posted this in the e-learning leadership forum...

I wonder if anyone can offer suggestions, ideas or epiphenies with regards to Google Apps and students leaving. Our Year 6 children are moving onto schools that are not in the cloud and we will be closing their accounts and removing them from our domain. This is our first set of learners leaving since we have been in the cloud.

How might schools 'hand over' children's google accounts? We are contemplating making copies and then making their caregivers owners of their docs or putting them onto a USB.

    I'd appreciate any insights...
