You will have heard me rant on about Explain Everything last week, it really is a great app.  Here's a link to a website '21ST CENTURY LEARNING WITH EXPLAIN EVERYTHINGthat has a range of ways it can be used which may help you to be a bit more inventive.  Love to hear and see what you do with this programme.

    That chocolate fish obviously worked!

Thanks Sasha. I'm looking forward to seeing what others form the rest of the cluster do with this programme now.  As an extra for experts (Sasha, set the pace :) try uploading it here to the group resources, or bookmark it (group bookmarks on the left) straight from YouTube.  Can't let you rest, that would be out of character for me.

Hi all.  Thanks for the fantastic week working with you, I always learn lots as you challenge my thinking.  I think/hope that works both ways ... :)

I have put a post up on my massey Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/heatherbellmasseyced/posts/1192327094127157 that includes photos from the teacher aide workshop on Friday.  You may want to share these with those dedicated people, and the rest of your staff.  Their biggest feedback to me was how much they learned from each other. Everyone approached the task I gave them differently and shared their outcomes so there was a huge number of "how did you do that?" questions flying around.  They even taught me a new trick, and we're pretty proud of themselves too!

I hope at the TAs will come back to you asking you to let them video their children and then to sit with you to understand what behaviours they can help with.  You're in charge of course but while I was with them we really explored what the video can tell you so I would love them to be able to have those conversations with you too.  We also looked at knowing the purpose of a video before taking it, and what features make them useful.  Hopefully they will be in a better position to take quality videos themselves now.

I would love to hear if this workshop impacts on practice so please post something to show what you are able to do differently with them now.  I did ask them if any of them were thick and no-one raised their hand so ...

Thanks Sonia.  Some great ideas to think about.  I look forward to seeing these ideas go up on your blogs and seeing if parents and children find it easier to comment.  You are right, the blogs should be about showing learning not published (polished) work and our intention is to grow new learning so each child's work has to allow their peers to engage and make suggestions.

Thanks Innes et. al. for this.  Important information to know. Sorry - I took my question off as i realised there was another discussion thread on this topic but you've answered here anyway :)

Several schools I work with are quite small / isolated or have decided to start with just a handful (<10) ipads. Perhaps they should legally purchase apps per device in preference to buying the VPP at this point in their development, at least until they know where they are going.  Many also haven't got people available to set up MDMs properly and I do hear horror stories around this process too so i'm not going there.

I'll take you up on the chat offer when it suits though.

    thanks, Heather

Apps are purchased from overseas. We don't pay GST on overseas purchases so you won't have a gst receipt.

My New Plymouth group of SENCos are meeting 21st August.  I'm going to put this on the agenda for them to create something workable so we'll see what we come up with.  Meanwhile their 'homework' is to follow this conversation (I've asked them to contribute already but they're shy :) and the links so please keep posting folks.

If you want to buy one, it's proper name is VGA to ipad adapter.  Be careful they don't sell you one to go to a mac computer.  Very similar. And make sure you have the ipad model as the more recent ones have a different fitting. http://store.apple.com/nz/product/MC552ZM/B/apple-vga-adapter

  • Heather Bell 30 Jun 2014 12:15pm () in voice to text for special needs students

Hi All.  I'm working with a group of outreach teachers who support children with learning needs in schools.  the teachers want a voice to text app that they can use to help students who can't write.  We hope that by seeing their own words in writing we will motivate them to 'get over the hump'.  We are already using the built in dictation facility on the ipad / phone but it's struggling to cope with the low level of speech clarity and has a very limited recording time.  Anyone got any suitable app recommendations?  Thanks.
