    Hi everyone

Great start to the discussion and some really good resources shared so far.  Thanks everyone Smile

LIke Allanah, Tania, Tessa & Catronia I have seen iPads used well to support teaching and learning.  iPads are intuitive to use and are being used in increasing ways to create, connect and collaborate.

iPads are increasingly being used as a tool to support children with their learning needs.  Recently I have had the opportunity to work with children who have dyslexia.  For this group, it is early days in using their iPads to support their learning but already their tutors are noticing a difference in the detail of the notes that the children are taking in class (using Pages or Notes), being able to sketch ideas and those that have the iPad2 are taking photos of the whiteboards with notes on.  One child reported to me that "The iPad is easier.  I can type and not have to worry about writing ..... I don't have to worry about the shape of the letters, I can just press the key and the iPad helps me get the spelling right"  Wow!

It is only three weeks since these students started taking their iPads to school.  As this group of children, their teachers and SPELD tutors grow in confidence with the techology, I am sure they will increase the ways the iPad is used including using the voice options.  It will be exciting to see their progress by the end of the term.

Union University has published a course on Integrating ipads into the classroom.  It is available now and has some very handy tips from set-up to apps for education.

Have been enjoying reading everyone's comments - thanks.

Another resource that might be useful is the Learn GarageBand in 30 days App, which is currently free on the AppStore (normally about $6).

You are asking about using equipment and safety.  I haven't seen anything other than what Karen has pointed out.  There is the statement about WiFi that might be useful, particularly in relation to WiFi in NZ Schools.

A great example of scaffolding via peers.

I have seen some great nature artwork produced through the use of a digital microscope.  By using the zoom feature, the microscope helped the children identify some markings on insects and butterflies that they wouldn't have normally noticed with the naked eye.  Not only did their drawings have more detail, but the children collaborated and talked through what they were seeing, building their knowledge base.

We have been using MYStory App with young children for storytelling with great success.  It is easy to use, and enables children to draw, use and take photoes, record voices and write stories before sharing a publishable version.  The developers are working on making a print function for it  but in the meantime have provided video instructions of how to print out books.

    Hi Josie

The Blogpress app works on the Ipad so you can use that to access your blog account.  There is a cost for the Blogpress app though.

There are some great apps out there for young children, including children under 5.  Through a research grant from CORE Education, Tania Coutts and I have been researcing the use of iPads in early childhood settings.  We have been observing how children are using iPads, what it is about the apps that engage them and what learning is happening for the children.  Like anything, there is a real mixture of apps - there are some fantastic ones that are open-ended and provide many learning experiences, and others that are really limited.  One of the apps that the children have been enoying  is Pirate Scribblebeard's Treasure where children draw illustrations in the story, and then these illustrations become animiated (check out our review).  iPads, coupled with good apps, have a place in early childhood settings just as much as other creative tools and it is exciting to think that this is becoming a reality.
