Fully endorse what KathC posted. We have moved from KnowledgeNET to Google Apps and although in the early stages of using this with students my feedback would be the same as KathC. I wouldn't want to be using Google Apps for Education account with classes of students without having the Teacher Dashboard - so well worth $4 a user a year to have this. Support from Hapara and Google has also been fantastic. Suggest it is worthwhile having a trial group/class first ( we did this last year) before you sign up all your students. We have all Year 3/4 on this year.

An easy and quick way to do the setup is to use a Mobile Device Management System. We have tried this just recently using something called Lightspeed. It was so quick and easy to set up the Ipads. We have set up our settings with the school as the top level (managed by the school administrator eg our WI-FI connection and restrictions), then the teams/syndicates as the next level down (they can select the apps and restrictions they want) then the class teacher can personalise the set up for all or some of the Ipads in their room. This is a Mobile Device System which was set up for schools and is only available to schools from what I understand. I'm not trying to do a sales pitch but we would be keen on finding other schools who are keen to use this -  as schools can join together to reduce the costs - yet be completely independent re settings and Apps etc that they want.

You can read more about Lightspeed at http://www.lightspeedsystems.com/products/mobile-manager/mobile-device-management/  and http://www.lightspeedsystems.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/San-Diego-Case-Study.pdf.

We are looking to use this system once we allow students to BYOD as it means we won't have to touch their device  ( they connect their device to the system via a website link) which will, in the near future, put it into "school mode" once they physically enter the school grounds.

Useful contacts would be Jason or James at the Technology Centre in Tauranga ph 075788433 as they have the knowledge to provide far more detail than I can and are happy for people to make contact and ask questions.  If you are interested tell them you know St Mary's Catholic Primary School Rotorua is keen to find other schools who would like to work together in order to reduce the annual licence fee for using this system ( you pay on a per device basis and we would be keen to get together with other schools so between us there are at least 500 devices registered)

I think Andy and Trevor have summed this up very nicely. It all comes down to what are we using ICT's for? We don't see ICT as a subject but as a vehicle to create and share our learning.
