    Hi Rebecca

We've supported a lot of schools to make the move to cloud, so can put you in touch with some if you want. You can email me direct saunil.hagler@cyclone.co.nz and I'll connect you with some similar to yours.

    Hi Emma

    Use Google Cast for Education:

    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-cast-for-education/bnmgbcehmiinmmlmepibeeflglhbhlea

Allows students to be on a separate network from the Cast devices and gives teachers control.

Let me know if you need any more help making it work.

    Hi Karen

The Acer Chromebook R11 is one of the few that currently allows use of Play Store Android apps on Chromebooks.  These are managed out of your Chrome management console.  While there are many that aren't educational, a lot are and of those, most will work best with touch (as Android is designed for touch).

There are also Chrome apps that work well/best with touch.  Explain Everything for Chrome (avail. via Chrome Web Store) works far better with touch Chrome than non-touch and can be a real game-changer for students (huge success on iPad).

The Acer R11 is also able to assume tablet-mode (folds back on itself) which avoids the issue mentioned in the Laptopmag article where users must reach over the keyboard to use the touch functionality.

Stylus integration for Chromebooks is coming on fast too.  The Acer Chromebook Spin 11 (not yet in NZ) will come with a Wacom stylus and special integrated features in OS to make it a great experience (also has "world facing camera").  The Samsung Chromebook Plus and Pro (not avail. in NZ, and quite dear) both have great stylus integration.

So in short, future-proofing your fleet might involve seriously considering touch.  Let me know if you want a demo device to play with saunil.hagler@cyclone.co.nz.  I can also demo Play Store apps etc.

    Regards

    Saunil

Hi Carol.  Did you buy through Cyclone?  If so, I can help you configure your device settings to ensure they're set right.  As I see it, the key is to ensure students are safe and secure when on the devices, whether at school or at home in BYOD contexts.  Certain device settings through Chrome mgmt ensure students can only use their school-managed Google account - therefore all user settings (eg YouTube restrictions where appropriate, external domain access in Hangouts etc) are prevented.  This provides the 'boundaries' that help ensure students have some flexibility while still keeping them safe.  It also means the school's doing all they can to ensure the kids are safe.  If students can sign in with an unmanaged Google account (ie .gmail.com) then they can access a heap of inappropriate content on your network, even if you have N4L filtering etc.  The same applies to using Guest mode when on home networks (generally kids can go anywhere on home networks).

Lightspeed has a new extension called 'Relay for Chrome' which runs whenever the students sign in with their school Google account, no matter the network -- even at home.  It filters them and keeps them safe. I reckon it's great value.

Happy to outline more on the above if you want.  saunil.hagler@cyclone.co.nz

    Hi Clive

I manage Cyclone's involvement with device procurement for the Manaiakalani schools.  They use the 11" Chromebooks and IMHO have been creating amazing digital learning objects in pairs/groups on that size screen.

Something else to consider is using large TV's on trolleys with a Chromecast in the back, which students can cast to using the Chromecast for Edu application.  This provides them with the large screen for shared viewing.  May be a good way of using the cheaper device price to allow the purchase of other beneficial IT for their ILE's.

    Warm regards
