Creative Commons in Schools

Helen Baxter -  Managing Directrix Mohawk Media

I had a great time at the Education Leaders Forum this year and heard lots of inspiring stories about how online tools are being used in Kiwi schools.

One thing that struck me was how many teachers seem unaware of the Creative Commons licensing system, and how it can a provide safe, legal ways of using digital media in the classroom.

It’s important that Creative Commons is embraced by educators as many students wrongly assume that anything published on the Internet can be freely copied and re-used. In fact when something is created be it a photo, document, music or video it is automatically protected by copyright. Class blogs that publish images or You Tube clips without permission may be doing so illegally if the blog is accessible outside the school system.
