Visarts summary to the 29th April

Kia ora koutou,

I hope everyone has had a good break and positive start back at school. Our department is finally moved into our new rooms after a term of teaching in a bit of organised chaos!

There seems to be some interest in having a junior art workshop in Auckland and possibly in Christchurch...for future messages I will redirect these to Jeanette Gilroy who has offered to facilitate a workshop. I would also encourage people who are recognised as having good practice in their regions stepping up to share your knowledge and experience in this way - a great excuse to get together in regions!

"Kōrero Mātauranga” - have your say on education in New Zealand - 4 questions as little or large as you like!

Primary/Junior Secondary Art:

My junior students are fascinated by drawing hair at the moment here are a few tutorials I found:

For fun:

Book portraits - an article from My Modern Met - very successful use of found book covers with real people

The Art and Business of Conceptual Portraiture - online courses, maybe helpful for some?

Coming up:

  • Design Assembly Workshop: Wine and Type on May 17th in Auckland

  • Light and Dark Secondary Schools Character Competition in its 5th year students have until June 5 to submit their entries.

  • Fri 8th June in Auckland - Digital Painting for Art Teachers - Visual Strategies workshop

In the news:

Recent teacher walkouts across some U.S.A. states:

What the teachers are asking for

Threads over the past couple of weeks:

  • Chris asked about peoples junior timetable structures - numerous (32) responses were collated and sent as a single reply…

  • Tessa wanted to know if anyone is doing Level 3 with only internal standards and if digital painting is appropriate for a student submission.

  • Katrina asked for some help moderating some cusp research samples in Photography

  • Jessica asked about Graphic novels as a genre for Design folios and if anyone has examples

  • Amie wanted ideas for equipment issue systems

  • Ayisha wants to know how much time people allow for 1.2

  • Katie asked about the viability of a 2 year L2/3 course
