Visual Arts Summary: 8th - 14th September 2014

Kia ora,

Last Thursday evening we had our second Twitter Chat #visartschatnz professional discussion, which was awesomely facilitated by Jon Mullen. The topic was 'What does modern learning look like in a visual arts classroom? '. See this link to review the discussion. We'll take a brief break from this format of professional development while our energies are focused on NCEA external folios. If you'd like to be involved with facilitating, please contact me, I'd like this process to be as community owned as possible.

Level One “range of media” Question

Maryann asked whether a student had completed work in a range of media in relation to a photography/installation board.

Michel Tuffery and Flox Workshops

These artists released dates for their first series of workshops in which students can create a series of woodblock/stencil works: Auckland 4th-5th October, Wanaka 13th-14th December, and Wellington 24th-25th January 2015. Follow this link to see further details, the flyer is attached to this post too. Contact Linda on (09) 963 4293 or linda@flox.co.nz for bookings and enquiries.

QR Codes on Level 3 Design Folios

Rob asked about the use of QR codes on folios to access animated works or similar solutions. Samantha shared her experience, and the idea that work not on the boards could be seen as additional, and can be seen as giving an unfair advantage. She also suggested that a digital folio submission might be a better way to go. Susie suggested putting stills on the board, making a digital submission, and speculated about markers accessing QR codes if they had the technology handy. Jude suggested contacted Martin Bennett at Pukekohe High School, and shared her experience with a student making a promo film, and this is being managed. Martin responded encouraging the use of digital submissions to take advantage of moving image, and wondered whether markers may not be able to use devices due to confidentiality. He emphasised that he wasn’t the ‘expert’, but has experience and is glad to help with digital submissions. Astrid is running a full day course at Yoobee November 20th, which will include examples of digital folios. She suggested Tim Costello at Wellington College as a example of a teacher extending a folio into a video advertisement. See this link for more information about the Yoobee course in Wellington.
