Learning@Schools 2012 - Claudelands Event Centre Hamilton

I totally enjoyed the learning at schools conference in Hamilton! The keynote speakers were awesome! Kevin Honeycutt was definitely my favorite speaker. I loved the passion and enthusiasm he spoke with! 

Breakout 1 - Getting your head into iCloud - STUART HALE

  • Learned about what iCloud was and it's purpose.
  • 85 million users for iCloud.
  • iCloud has been configured for one to one user experience - critical for schools now.
  • "EDUCATION IS OUR DNA" - vitally important to APPLE! 
  • Configured for the masses.
  • ICLOUD is interactive
  • iCloud is photo's, documents, pushes it pulls, so much more than a hard drive in the sky, it synchronizes calendars, mail etc... 
  • Centre of your digital life shifted to the cloud. Sends immediately to the cloud and pushed to all your devices. 
  • Stores your content and wirelessly pushes it all your other devices automatically.
  • Completely integrated to your apps. IT JUST ALL WORKS!!!
  • YOU TUBE IS A GREAT WAY TO LEARN HOW TO USE ICLOUD.
  • Still a lot of work for iCloud to be beneficial for schools

Breakout 2 - Mentoring Digital Learners - Kevin Honeycutt

  • Learners need to be taught how to use devices in school if we dont they will go home to an unfiltered web. 
  • GOT TO GET THIS KIND OF STUFF INTO SCHOOLS.
  • Let kids rehearse tradigital behavior in school. Through tweeting you can teach kids digital behavior.

  • Classroom management - get up and walk around and see how the kids are using devices.
  • Cannot slam the devices shut.
  • DIGITAL DUMPSTER DIVER - I'm looking for good stuff for my kids. 
  • KIDS NEEDS US ON THEIR DIGITAL PLAYGROUND.
  • Your child gets to write their own digital legacy right now. 
  • Technology is like a time machine you can send messages to your families in the future by leaving them messages etc...
  • Digital legacy is about being able to google you forever. BE PROUD OF YOUR DIGITAL LEGACY!

Breakout 3 - Online professional Development - how to accelerate literacy achievement in years 4 - 9

  • A description about how the online professional development is used in schools.

Breakout 4 - Using digital tools In relation to the registered teachers Criteria Suzie Vesper

  • Useful wiki that underpinned the workshop - www.registeredteachercriteria.wikispaces.com.
  • I liked how the wiki is set out into each criteria and then breakdown of what each it means and resources to help teachers. The format of the wiki is awesome, very user friendly.

Breakout 5 - Digital Storytelling 101 Naketa Ikihele

  • I found this breakout very engaging. As I already knew a lot about digital storytelling it was a great way to refresh my mind. 
  • Making stories of ourselves and who we are.
  • Exploring different software and apps to use for digital story writing.
  • What digital story writing is and how to useit in the classroom.

Overall a great conference to attend. Can't wait for the next one!
