Creatives in School is a funded partnership between Creative NZ and the Ministry of Education. Creatives are paid to work with a school(s) to undertake a project that encourages creativity. Teachers involved and schools are also paid for their time and the additional administration. The total fund per project is $17,000. The 4th Round of applications is open and closes on the 21st August. If you’re interested (or have been unsuccessful in the past), I’d strongly recommend reading the FAQs and also attending one of the webinars.
In my conversation with the Creatives in Schools team, many applications don’t even make it to the discussion stage of the process as they don’t meet the basic requirements. For examples the project must be between 8-20 weeks in duration, so if your proposal is 3 weeks long it doesn't fit.
There haven't been as many musical projects applied for or accepted as some of the other arts. Looking through the successful round 3 applications I can see a number of music examples but it would be great if more schools could tap into this create project.
Perhaps if you’ve been successful with a project, you’d like to share what impact it has had on your students and department?

The MENZA AGM and workshops are being held in Wellington after a number of years in AKL on the 19th June. (They will endeavor to be livestreamed). The AGM is a chance to hear about what hard work has been done by the national body of music educators on behalf of all music teachers in NZ. With the reflection that occurs at AGMs, there is also a chance to hatch new plans, have dreams and look to the changes that are on the horizon for music education (aside from NCEA and the new Yr1-13 Curriculum). If you’re within traveling distance to WLG how about you car-pool other music teachers (HODs how about you invite your ITMs) and aim to attend? If you’re a bit further afield, how about you block out the afternoon to spend some time with other music educators in the workshops and AGM. RSVP for the face to face or online here.
Find out more about MENZA here.
I’d like to draw extra attention to the Musical Futures PLD day in July. Originally based on the research of how popular musicians learn music (informally and focused on practical), Musical Futures has transformed the practice of teachers around the world. I’ve personally read a number of research papers that outline the positive impact implementing even just parts of the Musical Futures philosophy can have on student engagement, and teacher confidence in teaching. This includes bringing in more popular/contemporary music across your teaching program. Have a look at their website, do a bit of a google search for blogs and videos of teachers doing it to get more of an idea.

The term is nearly over, with a short week coming up. Someone remarked that it felt like week 35 this week! There are lots of unknowns looking at what events and performances would normally occur in Term 2 and it is really difficult to plan.
Today a small paid opportunity came up to review resources on TKI. As the Ministry of Education continues to implement the educational changes, updates the curriculum, NCEA and online resources, there will be an increasing number of short-term, small (and some bigger) contracts that will be advertised. These are great opportunities to use your expertise to support other teachers outside of your immediate community. They are also a chance for people to expand and diversify their employment options. I’d encourage you to update your C.V now, and apply for positions that come up that you think you’d be suitable for. I became the Musicnet facilitator with only a few years of secondary music teaching experience, and it opened up a wide number of other opportunities. When I applied, I didn’t think I had enough experience someone in this role would need.

These last two weeks I’ve been hearing about great new ideas about what teachers are planning for 2022. This includes ways of them finding out about new music and it’s made. Personally, I sometimes find myself listening to the music I already know, or similar. How do you find new music?
This week I’d like to highlight a new addition to the TKI online resources which I’ve already shared here before. Have a look at the other resources there whilst you’re at it.

Wow! We’re nearly at March already. It seems like the startup busyness of the school year has just intensified over the last week. I’ve been really encouraged by the support that the members of Musicnet have offered to colleagues reaching out for help, ideas and direction as they navigate changing circumstances.
Remember that anyone can send ask a question or share a resource via musicnet@lists.tki.org.nz. Perhaps if you haven’t contributed, or asked a question before, March could be the month that you post your first message…….
